On Tempting Providence

From Wikipedia :-

“In theology, Divine Providence, or simply Providence, is God’s activity in the world. By implication, it is also a title of God. A distinction is usually made between “general providence” which refers to God’s continuous upholding the existence and natural order of the universe, and “special providence” which refers to God’s extraordinary intervention in the life of people.[1]”

Yes. It is special providence that applies to me.

There is a saying, that we must never tempt providence. Never challenge or question the doings of God. You never know which ill-will comes true or which particular phrase from you gets a twist!! Here, I feel dear reader , that you must be wondering what I’m rambling about. Have patience, my friend, the truth is but just round the corner.

Let me elaborate my point with examples :-

1) The In-laws are in the kitchen, discussing the issue of repainting the house. I’m in the bedroom with the kids who are busy drawing with pens on a piece of paper each. The twins are engrossed with their respective scraps and I make a beeline for the kitchen, where I hear the FIL mentioning that the bedrooms also should be painted.

“Lets not do it Abba”, I said,”its only a matter of time before the kids start writing on the walls and ruining them. Why waste money on painting now. Lets postpone it for a year or so”. Speaking thus, I moved back to my room, to find my two angels busy scribbling on the walls with their pens. It was their first time and I stood there in shock, wondering if they heard me and decided to make my prophecy come true before its time!!

2) While giving a pep talk to my cousin when my aunt was hospitalized I said,”Stop pulling a long face and pretending as if she’s going to die. Chin up and cheer her up even if you can’t cheer up yourself”!!

At 1 am that night, we get the call of her demise.

3) On the way to office this morning, I was waiting at a signal when I saw a guy pushing his bike across the road. It was a flat tyre. I smiled to myself then, glad that till date I didn’t have to suffer the same fate, that my loyal bike had been efficient and trouble-free till date.

Is it a wonder then, that a few paces ahead, I felt the bike wobble, and before I knew it, BAM!!! I had a flat tyre. For the first time!!!

I had a tiring morning, dragging my bike to the nearest repair centre and getting the tube changed, all the while, chiding myself for counting my blessings too soon!!!

Why does it happen that we  always tend to tempt providence the wrong way, how come it is never tempted to oblige when I say something like, “Oh, how I wish my kids would sleep through the night” or when I say, “I wish me and the BF could disappear somewhere for a  day, just the two of us”!!

For the second example above, some might argue that it was a co-incidence, my saying something and it coming true, but then, why did it have to??

Alas, I’ve become cautious lately, especially this morning. I was quite rattled when my bike’s tyre collapsed!! I mean, just seconds before I was complementing my bike on never landing me in trouble, and what do we have here?! A Flat tyre!! It was just a matter of seconds, but long enough for God to hear me and teach me a lesson 😦

Anyhow, I’m back at work (charging full steam ahead 🙂 ) and have to cover up for all the lost time.

There’s a post pending on this weekend and Eid and of course, the twins. Have to download the snaps first. Will probably do that tonight.

Till then, you all, make sure you don’t count your chickens before they hatch 😀

Have a great weekend ahead 🙂
